Cereal storage : the grain silo

What is a grain silo ?

A silo facilitates good grain storage (wheat, corn, rye, rapeseed, soybean …) as the silo respects hygiene rules. The steel silo protects the grain against weather, pests and diseases.A silo allows the control of humidity and temperature which preserves the quality of the gain for long periods of time.
Flat grain storage is more vulnerable to pests and infestations.
Thus the silo both stores and improves the quality of the stored grain to respond to market demand and the required regulations.

Silos are more efficient than storage buildings :
– Health and safety of employees.
– Food safety of consumers.
– The management of the grain/product.
– The fight against pest and infestations.
– Respect of the environment.
– Quality and longevity of grain storage.
Privé silos are cylindrical as this is the best design for optimal strength for storage. On the other hand grain that is flat stored spreads and needs a far larger space.
Privé silos are manufactured from galvanised steel which is resistant to corrosion, allowing Privé silos to be durable and cost effective to maintain. Privé silos are filled from the top with grain transportation equipment : bucket elevator, conveyor belt, air pulse….

How to store and care for wheat to maintain its quality.

Grains are a living organism. With favourable conditions the grains will naturally germinate to form a new plant. The stored grain is an ecosystem.

The quality of the grain stored is a result of the grain itself and its environment.

Whatever the storage conditions, in the present of oxygen, the grains breath. The water content and the temperature of the grain influence the intensity of respiration which leads to a natural loss of material mass.
To limit the loss of dry matter and avoid germination the grain silo is the best solution.

The grain silo can be equipped with thermometry equipment to optimise ventilation.

Bushels and silos
with conical BASE

Bushels

Characteristics

A cereal bin is a bulk grain storage silo with a conical bottom in which the cylinder stops at the top of the discharge cone. Loads are taken up in the cement by uprights supported by feet.

Unlike a flat bottom, the conical bottom of the bushel allows the cereal to be emptied completely by gravity.

Galvanizing protects the bushel. The duration of protection is proportional to the thickness of the zinc, so the cylinder of a bushel, its feet and its frame are galvanized Z600 (600 grams of zinc/m²) (or hot-dip).

Diameters

Bushels are available in diameters from 2.68 to 8 meters. A bushel has a capacity of up to 600 tons, and can be fitted with temperature sensors and ventilation devices.

Slope: 45° or 60°, depending on the product stored.

Loading bushels

The loading troughs have a 45° slope, in accordance with the data sheet available for download.

In round bushels, the cone angle is identical over the whole cone, so the grain flows very well, unlike in square bushels.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Privé SA is certified ISO 9001.

Conical base silos

Characteristics

A conical base silo is a storage silo in which the cylinder descends to the ground. It is an alternative to bushels, with a lower price per housed ton.

The conical base silo differs from the silo equipped with a discharge cone. In a conical-bottom silo, the loads of the cone are taken up by a peripheral hoop and posts attached to the cylinder. In a conical-bottom silo, the inner slab is completely free to allow the passage of grain conveying equipment.

Options

Conical base silos are available in diameters ranging from 4.46 to 8 meters. A bushel has a capacity of between 8 and 600 tonnes, depending on its diameter and height.

The cone elements can be perforated or non-perforated. The perforated option enables the cell to be used as a long-term storage cell (after the drying season, for example).

Models

The conical base of the silo is available with a 45-degree slope.

Delivery/Loading Silo

Characteristics

The loading bucket is a conical-bottomed silo for storing and shipping grain. The loading bucket has a height of 4.40 meters under the valve for truck loading.

Galvanizing extends the life of the loading plug. In fact, the thickness of the ZINC is proportional to the duration of protection. The cylinder, hoop, cone and feet of the loading bucket are fully Z600 galvanized (600 grams of zinc/m2) or hot-dip galvanized.

In a Privé round cup, the cone angle is identical all around the cone. This is in contrast to a square bushel, in which the angle is 45 degrees only on the flanks. This means that in square cans, the grain flows less well in the English in which the angles are less than 45 degrees.

Options

The loading bucket is available with a diameter of 3.57 meters or 4.75 meters.

The loading bucket has a capacity of up to 142 tonnes.

Models

The loading bucket is available with a 45-degree slope.

Silo ventilation and emptying: Venticône®

Venticône® functions

In a silo, the stored product is emptied by gravity. The Venticône ® is a conical structure placed at the bottom of the silo. This equipment offers many advantages over a flat bottom.

The Venticône ® is designed to empty the silo completely by gravity and to ventilate the grain.

When the product is stored in a flat-bottomed silo, a residual slope is formed during emptying via the central trough. The residual slope is the grain remaining in the silo after emptying by gravity. Residual slope may vary in volume depending on the physical properties of the product. Residual sludge can cause problems for grain storage (mold, pests, etc.), so the silo must be cleaned regularly. Venticône ® allows almost complete emptying of grain by gravity.

With a Venticône ®, there’s no need for a sweeping screw. Manual emptying of the residual slope exposes the silo operator to mycotoxins, which constitutes a hazard. The Venticône ® allows grain to be ventilated, and improves food hygiene for consumers and livestock, as the grain is not in contact with the concrete (unlike flat storage).

The time saved enables the farmer to carry out work with greater added value.

The Venticône ® also provides ventilation for stored products such as wheat, corn, barley, rye, soybeans… The cone elements have 1.6 mm deep gills to facilitate ventilation. If necessary, the cone elements have pan-head bolts for easy emptying.
The operator can easily clean the underside of the Venticône ®.

In short, the Venticône ® is a silo equipment with many advantages.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Privé SA is certified ISO 9001.

Venticônes® models

Venticônes® can be floor-mounted, with the stored grain taken up by a screw inserted into the side of the cylinder and descending to the center of the cell. The screw can be permanently installed in the cell, or used on several silos, to reduce investment costs.

For a Venticône® on the floor, the outlet diameter is 500 mm.
Venticônes ® can be raised to allow the conveyor to pass through.

For a raised Venticône®, the outlet diameter is 250 to 440 mm.
Venticônes® have a 28°, 45° or 60° slope, depending on the product stored.

If the Venticône® is intended for storage of a product that does not require ventilation (wood pellets, etc.), the cone elements are not equipped with vents.

Perforated floors

Perforated floors are an effective alternative to Venticônes®. They provide perfect ventilation over the entire silo surface.

Privé SA has been manufacturing perforated flooring since 1970.

Perforated floors are made of Z275 galvanized steel.

Privé perforated floors consist of a set of floorboards for the cell surface. The diameter of the ventilation holes is 1.3 mm. The perforation is suitable for cereals and rapeseed.

Perforated floor supports have a top edge bent at 90° to avoid shearing the floorboards.

The height of the perforated floor’s galvanized supports is 340 mm or 475 mm, and the height under the floor is 295 mm or 430 mm.

All sealing strips between the cylinder and the floorboards are included in the Privé offer. Ventilation inlets can be 340 mm or 500 mm in diameter, and conveyor inlets 550 mm high and 625 mm wide.

The narrow gap between the perforated floorboards prevents grain and impurities from getting trapped between the boards.

The sweeper auger hooks onto the grooved flaps on the periphery of the floor, preventing the auger from slipping.

Our storage tanks for professionals

The different types of tanks

Water is an essential element of life, but it can also be a powerful weapon against fire, depending on the capacity stored. Water tanks are reservoirs that store large quantities of water for use in emergency situations, such as fires. These tanks are also used for non-potable rainwater harvesting, liquid storage and as reservoirs for sprinkler systems.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Privé SA is certified ISO 9001.

Functions

Water storage

Water tanks as a fire-fighting water reserve.

When a fire breaks out, it’s essential to have an immediate source of water to fight the flames. Water tanks are used to store large quantities of water (several thousand liters) for firefighters and fire departments. These tanks can be located close to buildings and can be buried or above ground. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are particularly useful for this application, as they are durable, corrosion-resistant and can store large quantities of water.

Water tanks as rainwater harvesters..

Water tanks are also used as rainwater harvesters. Rainwater can be collected from roofs, filtered and stored in the tanks for later use. This water can be used to water gardens, fill swimming pools and ponds, or for other non-drinking applications. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are ideal for this application, as they are weather-resistant and can be easily connected to rainwater harvesting systems.

Water tanks as sprinkler reservoirs.

Sprinkler systems are fire protection systems that use water to extinguish flames. Water tanks are used to store the water required by sprinkler systems. They can be installed inside or outside buildings, and are designed to activate automatically in the event of a fire. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are particularly useful for this application, as they are corrosion-resistant and can store large quantities of water.
