Ventilation and Emptying of Silos: The Venticône®®

Functions of the Venticône®

In a silo, the stored product is emptied by gravity. The Venticône® is a cone-shaped structure positioned at the bottom of the silo. This equipment offers numerous advantages over a flat-bottom design.

The Venticône® is designed to fully empty the silo by gravity and to ventilate the grains effectively.

When the product is stored in a flat-bottom silo, emptying it through the central auger can leave behind a residual slope. This residual slope consists of grains that remain in the silo after gravitational emptying and can vary in volume based on the physical properties of the product. This residual slope can lead to issues such as mould and pests, necessitating regular cleaning of the silo. The Venticône® allows for nearly complete gravitational emptying of the grains.

With a Venticône®, a sweep auger becomes unnecessary. Manual removal of the residual mound places the silo operator at risk of exposure to mycotoxins, which poses a health hazard. The Venticône® also ensures proper ventilation of the grain, promoting better food hygiene for consumers and livestock, as the grain does not come into contact with concrete (unlike flat storage).

The time saved allows farmers to focus on more value-added work.

Additionally, the Venticône® provides ventilation for stored products such as wheat, corn, barley, rye, soybeans, …. The cone’s elements are designed with 1.6 mm deep openings to enhance ventilation. If needed, the cone elements are equipped with wing bolts for easier emptying. Operators can also easily clean beneath the Venticône®.

In summary, the Venticône® is a silos equipment that presents many benefits.

Venticônes® models

Venticônes® can be floor-mounted, with the stored grain taken up by a screw inserted into the side of the cylinder and descending to the center of the cell. The screw can be permanently installed in the cell, or used on several silos, to reduce investment costs.

For a Venticône® on the floor, the outlet diameter is 500 mm.
Venticônes ® can be raised to allow the conveyor to pass through.

For a raised Venticône®, the outlet diameter is 250 to 440 mm.
Venticônes® have a 28°, 45° or 60° slope, depending on the product stored.

If the Venticône® is intended for storage of a product that does not require ventilation (wood pellets, etc.), the cone elements are not equipped with vents.
